Before we step into the topic of today I will like to tell you “we’ve been fed a lie.”

The Lie: Money is the most important requirement for success.

Why?

To answer this question: I will ask you two questions:

I) If money is the most important requirement for success would Bill Gate have been a Harvard drop out?

II) If money is the most important requirement for success would Faraday have discovered electricity considering it took him more than 900 tries?

This is why you must discover your purpose of setting up that online business or e-commerce site.
For me
it is making customers happy.

However, most people’s primary aim is to make money.

If this is your overriding purpose then you would miss the mark.

For you to be successful in an online shop business, you must seek to make your customers happy, and not only that, you must also be able to put yourself in the shoes of your customers. That way you get to understand the needs of your customers more-thus giving you a better leverage to address the needs of your customers.

This is why it’s important you make your happiness come from that of your customers. That is why I am sharing below

Five Qualities You Must Possess in order to become a Successful Online Shop Owner.

1. Focus

when people establish an online shop business, they often create a wide product range.

Their aim being to capture everybody and this is actually a big problem.
Why?

It is a big problem because extensive product range is a conversion killer. Hence you must be focused on what type of product you want to delve into.

Doing this can increase your traffic by 500 %

How?

When you have wide product range, it takes a longer time for your prospect to make a buying decision and this is what psychologist call choice overload.

To use a real life case study; let’s look at Sheenaa professor at Columbia University, in his experiment as illustrated on Social Triggers.com

In this experiment, Sheena displayed 24 flavours of jam on the first day and 6 on the second day (with the option of free tasting)

Result
When 24jams were displayed, 60% of the customer stopped for a taste test and 3% of those bought some. When 6 jams were available, 40% of the customers stopped for a taste test; but 30% bought some jam.
This goes to show that few options (focus) lead to an increase in sales.

2. Self Motivation and Passion

“While embracing the rose flower; be certain you are also comfortable with the thorns around it.”

When you decide to setup your online store, you will need to ask yourself questions like- this product I am promoting or selling is it something I am passionate about?

If the answer is no, then look for another product ranges to promote. The reason is because lack of passion will certainly lead to drop in sales.

Hence, you need to be self motivated enough to set a schedule and stick to it, in order to achieve your dreams. If not, lack of self motivation will make you to become lazy.

3. Positivity

“Perhaps the most powerful influence on your attitude and personality is what you say to yourself, and believe. It is not what happens to you, but how you respond”~Achieving Personal Greatness by Nido Quebin
Dr Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania wrote a fascinating book based on 25years of research into this subject LEARNED OPTIMISM

Dr Martins Seligman says, “There are there are basic difference in the reactions of optimists and pessimist. The first difference is that the optimist sees a setback as temporary, while the pessimist sees it as permanent.”
Secondly, the pessimist sees difficulties as pervasive while the optimist sees it as specific. That is for the pessimist disappointment is an indication of problem in every in every area of his life.

Optimist sees it as an isolated incident.

Thirdly’ the pessimist takes everything as personal while an optimist sees event as external.
Hence an optimist is easily able to move past any disappointment. Another point I want make, is this being optimist increases your sales as your positive energy passes on to your customers which makes it easy for them to buy from you. It also stimulates your creative muscle.

4. Creativity:

“Creativity is like any human faculty; it can be developed with practice and strengthened with constant use”~Nido Quebin
“Creativity is like a muscle, if not put to constant use it will go banana”

This is why you must stretch you creative muscle every day. It is so important because coming up with unique marketing and advertising for your store, doing press release and guest blogging all require a creative mind.

What to do to boost your Creativity

a) Commit Yourself to Developing your Creativity.

According to cognitive psychologist Robert J Sternberg, creativity can be broadly defined as”...the process of producing something that is both original and worthwhile.”
Creativity involves finding new ways to solve problems. So in order to be creative you need to devote yourself towards developing your creative ability (what you are good and that which you desire passion from)

b) Be Willing to Fail:

The greatest men are those who aren’t afraid to fail, Faraday failed many times before he produced electricity. So be willing to take risk and you would find out your creative muscle is growing from strength to strength.

c) Build your Confidence:

Insecurity kills creativity”

Look at areas where you’re less competent and strive to build competency in those areas. In order to achieve competency in this areas, simply makes small achievable goals.

One great way to explore creativity is to brainstorm. To do this, suspend self criticism and judgement, and then begin to write down related ideas and possible solution.

5. Professionalism:

Professionalism entails the skills, attitude and packaging you bring into your business.
For example your business should have a compelling description. People should at face value be able to say this is what your business provides.
You should also ensure your business has excellent customer service. Mails received from customers should also be promptly answered. This goes a long way in placing your business as a brand that values customers.
So what other qualities do you think is required to start an online business or e-commerce site? Would love to hear from you.
